When in the summer months, Heybeliada, the second largest princely island, became the destination of many wealthy Jewish families, it was decided to build a synagogue here.
From the beginning of the 1940s to the mid-1950s, premises of a primary school or privately owned houses had to serve as houses of worship until the Bet Yaakov Synagogue finally opened its doors in 1956.
Until 1997, the synagogue was open every day in summer. Due to the fact that many Jewish families have moved away, it now only opens on certain days.
