Built on the foundations of the Great Palace of Constantinople, this small museum with its impressive mosaics dates from Late Antiquity (between 450-550 AD).
In 1953 it became part of the Archaeological Museum Complex and joined the Hagia Sophia Museum in 1979. The Great Palace Mosaic Museum was built exactly on the partially preserved mosaic floor of the northeastern part of the colonnaded courtyard of the palace.
The mosaics show mainly motifs from hunting and shepherding scenes, the former country life, animals and many mythical creatures. The highlight of the collection is without doubt the mosaics of a large courtyard, which were discovered during excavations about 60 years ago and painstakingly as well as masterfully reconstructed within many years.
