Istanbul Museum of the History of Science and Technology in Islam (Islam Bilim ve Teknoloji Müzesi)

Istanbul Museum of the History of Science and Technology in Islam

Opened in May 2008, the Museum of the History of Science and Technology in Islam is located in one of Istanbul’s most beautiful squares, Gülhane Park, in the former stables (Has Ahırlar Binası) below Topkapı Palace.

The founder of the state museum is Prof. Dr. med. Fuat Sezgin, a true pioneer in the research of Islamic science culture in Arabic. One of the cooperation partners is the Goethe University in Frankfurt.

Most of the exhibits were reconstructed on the basis of illustrations and descriptions in Arabic, Persian and Turkish original versions – in some cases in their Latin or Spanish translations – by the Institute of the History of Arabic-Islamic Sciences of Goethe University.

The exhibition area covers a total of 3550 square meters, on which three coupled building complexes stand. The scientific collections, dating from the 9th to the 17th century, currently include up to 500 items from the fields of astronomy, geography, nautics, time measurement, geometry, optics, medicine, chemistry, minerals, physics, technology, architecture and war technology, which are displayed in a systematic arrangement. The museum is groundbreaking as it covers comprehensively the historical evolution of science in the most diverse disciplines for the first time.

A highlight of the museum is definitely the globe, which is a reconstruction of one of the most important scientific-historical achievements of Arab-Islamic geography. It can be found right in front of the entrance to the historic building. In addition, you can take a look at the world map with spherical projection made on behalf of the caliph Al-Ma’mûn (reigned 813-833 AD), which reflects the geography of the then known world in astonishing accuracy. There are valuable discoveries and scientific-historical processing of the tireless research of Dr. med. Fuat Sezgin.

The Museum of the History of Science and Technology is widely recognized for its aesthetics and didactics of science objects as well for the harmony of experience and learning, and forms another important bridge that serves the exchange of east-western knowledge culture.
