A monumental dome, Byzantine mosaics and centuries of Istanbul’s history: Hagia Sophia is one of the city’s most memorable sights.
Before booking, understand which part of the building you can visit. The sightseeing route leads to the upper gallery, while the mosque’s worship area operates separately.

Which Hagia Sophia Ticket Should You Book?
Hagia Sophia Visitor Ticket + Audio Guide

Best for visitors who want to explore the gallery independently.
The linked Istanbul Welcome Card product is listed as Hagia Sophia admission with instant QR entry and an audio guide. Check its current inclusions and ticket-use instructions before booking.
Instant QR delivery does not mean instant entry: you may still need to wait at security and the entrance.
Buying Admission or Choosing a Package
The standard admission price is not necessarily the final price of a partner package. Compare what is included, such as the audio guide, additional attractions and booking conditions.
If you choose a multi-attraction package, check each attraction separately. In particular, confirm whether Topkapi’s Harem or the Hagia Sophia History & Experience Museum is included rather than assuming it is.
Which Part of Hagia Sophia Can Tourists Visit?

The tourist ticket provides access to the designated upper-gallery route. It does not give unrestricted access to the ground-floor worship area.
From the gallery, visitors can appreciate the interior from above and explore Byzantine mosaics along the permitted route. Follow the signs for the Visitor Area, rather than joining an entrance intended for worship.
The separate visitor route was introduced to allow sightseeing without disrupting religious services. Ministry of Culture and Tourism explanation.
👉🏻 Our tip: Plan around the current visitor route, not older photographs or guides showing access to every part of the building.
What to See Inside Hagia Sophia
Take your time with a few highlights rather than searching for a long checklist of objects.

1) The Monumental Dome

Look up. You're standing under one of the greatest architectural achievements in history. Floating 55.6 meters high, it was the largest in the world for nearly 1,000 years.
2) The Deisis Mosaic

Often called the most beautiful mosaic in Hagia Sophia, this stunning 13th-century artwork depicts Christ with the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist. The humanity in their expressions is breathtaking.
3) The Empress Zoe Mosaic

A fascinating piece of royal drama. Empress Zoe had the face of her husband in the mosaic changed twice as she remarried, cementing her power in gold tiles.
4) The Weeping Column

Find the column with a bronze hole in it. Legend says if you put your thumb in, rotate your hand 360 degrees, and it comes out moist, your wish will be granted or your illness cured.
5) Viking Graffiti

Look closely at the marble railings. You can find a 9th-century inscription carved by a Viking mercenary named “Halvdan”, a timeless “I was here.”
6) The Imperial Gate

The largest door in Hagia Sophia, once reserved only for the Emperor. It's rumored to be made from the wood of Noah's Ark.
7) The Omphalion

This beautiful inlaid marble circle on the ground floor (viewable from above) is where Byzantine emperors were crowned. You're looking at the very center of the Eastern Roman Empire.
8) The Seraphim Angels

In the four corners supporting the dome, you'll see mosaics of six-winged Seraphim angels. One of their faces was uncovered during recent restorations.
9) Henricus Dandolo's Tombstone

Find the tomb marker for the Venetian Doge who led the Fourth Crusade that sacked Constantinople in 1204. A dramatic piece of history right at your feet.
10) Giant Calligraphy Roundels

These massive black-and-gold discs feature the names of Allah, Prophet Muhammad, and the first Caliphs. Added in the 19th century, they are a powerful symbol of Hagia Sophia's history as a mosque.
What Should You Wear to Hagia Sophia?

Dress for an active place of worship, including when visiting the gallery.
Women should bring a scarf to cover their hair. Choose clothing that covers shoulders and knees, and follow staff instructions if additional covering is required. The operator states that coverings are available to purchase when needed.
For footwear, follow the instructions for the area you enter. Do not assume that the sightseeing gallery and carpeted prayer area have identical arrangements.
How to Plan a Smooth Visit
Leave Time for the Entrance
Avoid placing another timed booking immediately after Hagia Sophia. Your time inside may be relatively short, but entry checks and queues can make the overall visit longer.
Booking online is not a promise that every queue disappears.
Prepare Your Audio Guide Before Arriving
If your booking includes a mobile audio guide:
Use headphones rather than your phone’s speaker.
Be Flexible Around Worship and Conservation
Hagia Sophia is both a historic monument and an active mosque. Follow staff directions, keep your voice low and respect any temporary barriers.
Do not expect every mosaic or viewpoint to be unobstructed during your visit.
Take Photographs Respectfully
Check the signs before photographing each area. Avoid flash, do not block narrow sections and respect the privacy of people praying.
Check Access Before Booking if Needed
The visitor route reaches an upper level. If you use a wheelchair, have difficulty walking or are bringing a stroller, confirm the current access arrangements with the operator before purchasing.
Do not assume that the historic route is entirely step-free.
Hagia Sophia Mosque or History & Experience Museum?
These are two different visitor experiences.
Hagia Sophia Mosque Visitor Gallery

Choose this to enter the historic building itself and follow its designated sightseeing route.
Hagia Sophia History & Experience Museum

This is a separate museum in the Defter-i Hakani building in Sultanahmet, using audiovisual displays and exhibits to explain Hagia Sophia’s history. It is not the gallery inside the mosque.
Before paying, read the exact attraction name. Only assume both are included when your chosen ticket explicitly says so.
