The Istanbul tram is one of the easiest ways to reach the city’s major sights. For most visitors, the essential route is T1 Kabataş–Bağcılar, which serves Sultanahmet, Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Grand Bazaar, Spice Bazaar, Karaköy and Kabataş.
Take T1 for most Old City attractions. Use Sultanahmet for Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and Basilica Cistern; Gülhane for Topkapi Palace; Beyazıt–Kapalıçarşı for the Grand Bazaar; and Eminönü for the Spice Bazaar and ferry connections. Pay with Istanbulkart or use a digital QR Transport Pass on supported journeys.
Most modern tram services generally operate from around 06:00 to 00:00, but schedules can change by line, day, maintenance work and special events.

Sultanahmet Stop

Use Sultanahmet for Istanbul’s main historic attractions:
These attractions are within walking distance of one another. The tram can become extremely crowded around Sultanahmet during the late morning and afternoon.
✅ Travel tip: If you are visiting several Old City attractions, arrive early and complete the area on foot instead of repeatedly boarding the tram for one or two stops.
Gülhane Stop

Gülhane is usually the most convenient stop for Topkapi Palace, particularly for visitors approaching from Eminönü or Karaköy.
It is also useful for:
Do not confuse the T1 Topkapı stop with Topkapi Palace. They are in different parts of the city.
Beyazıt–Kapalıçarşı Stop

Get off at Beyazıt–Kapalıçarşı for the main covered section of the Grand Bazaar.
The Grand Bazaar is large and has several entrances. Save the location of the gate you used if you plan to return to the same tram stop.
Eminönü Stop

Use Eminönü for:
You can transfer between T1 and T5 Eminönü–Alibeyköy in this area. Allow sufficient walking time because platforms, ferry piers and stops are not all located at the same entrance.
Karaköy and Tophane Stops

Use Karaköy for the waterfront, Galata Bridge and connections towards Galata Tower.
The walk to Galata is steep; travellers who want to avoid part of the climb can use the historic F2 Tünel connection.
Use Tophane for Galataport, Istanbul Modern and nearby Beyoğlu streets.
Kabataş Stop

Kabataş is the final central stop of T1 and an important transfer point.
From Kabataş you can:

Find the Correct Stop and Direction
Check the final destination shown on the tram:
Kabataş direction: For Sultanahmet to Eminönü, Karaköy, Galataport and Kabataş
Bağcılar direction: For Kabataş or Karaköy to Sultanahmet, Grand Bazaar and the western districts
At busy stops, confirm the direction before passing through the gate.
Pay Before Boarding
At most modern tram stops, tap your Istanbulkart or scan an eligible QR ticket at the entrance reader.
One validated ride is required for each passenger. Do not follow another passenger through the gate without validating your own journey.
Wait Behind the Platform Line
Allow passengers to leave before boarding. T1 can become especially crowded around Sultanahmet, Eminönü and Karaköy.
Keep bags closed and valuables secure in busy vehicles and stations.
Follow the Stop Announcements
Modern trams provide visual and audio stop information. Start moving towards the door before your stop, but do not block the exit area throughout the journey.

Istanbul Tram Tickets and Payment
Istanbulkart

Istanbulkart is the most flexible payment option for visitors using the wider public transport network. It can be used on municipal metro, tram, bus, ferry, funicular, Marmaray and Metrobus services.
The physical card and travel balance are separate. Load sufficient credit before entering the platform.
Choose Istanbulkart if you:
Digital QR Transport Pass

Visitors mainly travelling around Sultanahmet, Karaköy, Taksim and other supported tourist areas can use a digital QR Transport Pass on eligible routes, including T1.
You select the number of journeys, receive the QR pass by email and scan it directly from your phone at supported gates.
The QR Transport Pass does not cover the complete Istanbul transport network. It is not valid on public ferries, Marmaray, Metrobus, M11 Istanbul Airport Metro or cross-continent bus journeys.
Choose it if:
Single-Use Tickets

Selected ticket machines may offer limited-use tickets. These are generally less flexible for visitors taking several journeys.
Machine payment options can vary. Carry a small amount of Turkish lira and keep a bank card available as a backup.
