Sabiha Gökçen International Airport in Istanbul

Sabiha Gökçen International Airport (SAW) is the second largest commercial airport in Turkey after Istanbul Airport and is located about 40 kilometers east of the Bosphorus on the Asian side of Istanbul. It is named after Sabiha Gökçen, the adoptive daughter of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.

The airport has one terminal and one runway. In 2019 it handled over 35 million passengers in the year 2019.

Flights to and from Sabiha Gökçen International Airport

Sabiha Gökçen International Airport is mainly served by low-cost carriers. Between 2015 and 2020, Sabiha Gökçen International Airport was also served by Turkish Airlines, but after the opening of the new Istanbul Airport, Turkish Airlines decided to operate all flights from Sabiha Gökçen International Airport via her low-cost carrier AnadoluJet.

The airport is connected to Istanbul city center via the E 80 highway. The journey to the European part of Istanbul takes at least 70 minutes or longer. 

•           Public Transport

At the moment there is no train/metro connection to Sabiha Gökçen International Airport. The line is still under construction and is expected to be completed in early 2021.

•           Shuttle Buses

Shuttle buses from Havabüs run every 30 minutes between the airport and Kadıköy on the Asian side and Taksim on the European side of Istanbul.

The bus stop is in front of the arrivals hall on the opposite side of the street

The journey time to the ferry terminal at Kadıköy is at least 40 minutes, to Taksim on the European side at least 70 minutes. The Havaş buses stop there 500 meters from Taksim Square right next to the Point Hotel.

Havabüs information desks are located directly in front of Sabiha Gökçen International Airport.

Tickets are bought directly on the bus. Please note that payment can only be made in cash.

The last bus from the airport leaves at 01:00 AM, the first bus from Taksim at 03:03 AM and from Kadiköy at 04:15 AM.

Many hotels offer a shuttle service directly to Sabiha Gökçen International Airport.

In Turkey, taxi rates are set by the authorities of cities or districts. The Istanbul taxi tariff was last set in September 2019 and published in the official tariff regulation. It is binding for all taxis and taxi companies within the compulsory driving area and may not be exceeded or undercut. This is guaranteed by taximeters installed in the taxis and officially calibrated.

The basic fee is 5.00 Turkish Lira, the kilometer price is 3.10 Turkish Lira, for standing and waiting time 18.00 Turkish Lira per hour are charged, short distances cost 13.00 Turkish Lira.

Public Transportation

•           Train/Metro

The train/metro connection to Sabiha Gökçen International Airport is expected to be completed at the beginning of 2021; at the moment there is no train/metro connection.

•           Bus

Bus lines E-10 and E-11 run between Sabiha Gökçen International Airport and Kadıköy, a district in the Asian part of Istanbul. From Kadıköy you can take the ferry to the European part of Istanbul (Eminönü, Karaköy and Kabataş).

Both buses run every 20 minutes. The journey from Sabiha Gökçen to Kadıköy takes 60 minutes, but may take considerably longer depending on the volume of traffic.

Uber

The company UBER has its headquarters in San Francisco, USA. It is a US-American service company that provides transportation services online in many cities worldwide.

Since May 31, 2019 UBER is banned in Istanbul and doesn’t offer its services anymore.

From Sabiha Gökçen International Airport (SAW) to Istanbul International Airport (IST)

After the opening of the new Istanbul International Airport, most airlines have moved to the new airport.

Passengers who need to go from Sabiha Gökçen International Airport to Istanbul International Airport can get there by shuttle buses from Havabus. The line İST-8 SABİHA GÖKÇEN- İSTANBUL HAVALİMANI runs every 40 minutes between Istanbul’s two airports, which are 50 kilometers away from each other. The journey takes about 70 to 80 minutes and costs about 30 Turkish Lira.

Alternatively, a taxi can be hired, the ride takes about 45-60 minutes and costs about 140 – 160 Turkish Lira.

There is a post office in the arrivals area of the airport.
