The Belgrad Forest (Belgrade Ormanı) is a recreational area north of Istanbul with an area of 5442 hectares. It is named after the Serbs who were deported here by Suleiman the Magnificent after the siege of Belgrade.

In Byzantine and Ottoman times, the forest was Istanbul’s most important water source. Despite its low sea level, heavy rainfall occurs. The forest is characterized by a transitional climate between the Central European and Mediterranean climate. As a result, a wide variety of plant species grow. The Belgrade Forest plays an important role in the region. It is the natural habitat for a large number of birds, reptiles and mammals. Forest conservation measures and the prohibition of hunting help endangered species to reproduce.

There are also nine nature parks and six old dams, which were built in Ottoman times.

Our tip:
If you are traveling with your children or in a group, we recommend  visiting the Forest Kemerburgaz adventure park with a high rope track, zip line, go-kart track and much more.
